Background
Alfred is a Senior Associate in our Corporate Client Practice Group. He specialises in commercial litigation, with a particular emphasis on construction and engineering disputes. Alfred has been involved in litigation at all levels of the Singapore’s courts as well as arbitrations. He was also involved in various front-end non-contentious works including drafting, reviewing and advising on various standard form and general commercial contracts.
Alfred obtained his Bachelor of Engineering, Civil (Hons) before going on to obtain his LL.B. (Hons) at the National University of Singapore on its accelerated Graduate LL.B. Programme. Whilst in law school, Alfred was awarded “2nd runner-up” in the annual Advocacy Cup Competition.
Alfred was a prosecutor with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Whilst in civil service, he also served a stint at the Attorney-General’s Chambers as an Assistant Public Prosecutor. In private practice, Alfred completed his pupillage with a Senior Counsel cum specialist judge and thereafter commenced his practice in the litigation and dispute resolution department of one of the leading firms in Singapore.
In 2011, Alfred authored the chapter on contract law in the 4th edition of “You and the Law”, a legal guide published by the Singapore Association of Women Lawyers (SAWL).
Alfred joined the Firm in 2011 and speaks fluent English, Mandarin and Hokkien.

- Assisting in an arbitration hearing involving multi-million dollar claims for variations, delays and defects rectification in a high-end residential development.
- Assisting in the defence of multi-million dollar claims in relation to shareholder and breach of agreement disputes involving multiple plaintiffs, defendants and third parties.
- Assisting in a 19-day High Court trial and subsequent appeal to the Court of Appeal in relation to a defamation suit against the President of a social club.

Some of Alfred’s notable MOM matters include the following:
- Leading and training a team of prosecutors in the enforcement of the Factories Act (now Workplace Safety and Health Act).
- Assisting in drafting the Workplace Safety and Health Act (Act 7 of 2006) and its subsidiary legislation.
- Representing MOM in the enforcement of various statutes, ranging from immigration and employment offences to Workmen Compensation Act offences.
- Prosecuting a multi-national process engineering company where a safety lapse resulted in two fatalities.
- Prosecuting a multi-national construction company where a safety lapse in the maintenance of the lifting equipment resulted in one fatality.
- One of two lead prosecutors in the prosecution of a high profile steel-latticework collapse which resulted in two fatalities and injuries to 29 others.
(Public Prosecutor v Chan Heng Chye and Others [2007] SGDC 142) - Prosecuting various cases involving the harbouring of illegal immigrants, abuse of work passes and false declarations of work pass applications.
(Public Prosecutor v Mohd Aslam s/o Jahandad [2006] SGDC 9)
(Public Prosecutor v Gan Too Cheh [2005] SGMC 30) - Successfully plea-bargained for 14 counts of various employment-related charges against the director of a company to be withdrawn and compounded.
